Living in Salmon's Lane, Whyteleafe, top end, I used to count the planes from Kenley Aerodrome on their way out and later count them on the way in. I used to wave to them, although now I doubt if they actually saw me, then I was convinced they did.

Lessons in the Air Raid Shelter; watching bombs and dog fights overhead; the tannoy on the aerodrome telling my brother and me to "get in the shelter". Did we? No, so an RAF Personnel Officer was sent to see that we did. Were we scared? No way!
