Elias Sterio - My uncle died in Normandy in WW2 & for 50 years that`s all I knew. This year, along with family research,I decided to find out more about my Uncle & at least go to Normandy to visit his grave.
I planned to visit his grave 60 years after he died, 13th June 2004.
With the help of the good people in Durham I found out he was killed Just outside Tilly sur Seulles at Le Pont de la Guillette. When we got to Bayeux the guy in the local garage had never heard of Le Pont de la Guillette, neither could we find it on any maps. We drove down the Bayaeux to Tilly road because we knew that`s where he was heading with the Durham Light infantry. On the side of the road, just outside Tilly (Buceels) was a sign "Le Pont de la Guillette" along side the sign was a lane, it was down that lane that my uncle and others were ambushed and lost their lives. We had found where he had died then went on to his graveside 60 years to the day he died.
Elias Sterio was born in Swansea Wales in 1919 and Died in Normandy 1944 just 24. He left a widow, Bridget & a 1 year old baby, Mary
Mary has had 4 children of her own and 12 grandchildren. Elias` memory lives on through his family.
I have put all the info and photos in a folder and past them on to Mary and her children.
My name is Brian Jenkins and my Mother was Elias` younger sister Grace - born Cardiff Wales. If anyone has any further info I would be grateful for it.
Thanx
Brian
