I joined the TA before the war and was mobilized on August 24, 1939 with 284/90 HAA Regt RA in the Alexandra Palace grounds where we had been doing our evening training periods. Two days later we moved to a tented site in Essex - Aylets Farm, Rainham. The unit had not been to firing camp and was not permitted to man a gunsite so we were given training in small arms etc. In October we took over the defence of Brooklands race track in Surrey, home of the Hawker and Vicers aircraft factories. Our weapons - 8 lewis guns in pits that we dug around the perimeter.
Jumping ahead, I stayed with HAA, learning radar and served in the UK, West Africa and India.
After the war I remained in the army and finally retired in 1966 in the rank of WOI.
I will be pleased to write in detail if required
