Welcome Here we present a snapshot of 40 main European languages. Travelling from Andorra to Ukraine, you can find out who speaks the diverse languages of Europe, where they can be found, and how they are related. You can also listen to a few essential words in most of them.

Languages evolve and change together with the people who speak them. Language and identity are closely intertwined and what makes a language goes beyond national borders and is constantly under discussion.

We use the European Union's official definitions of language, majority language, minority language and community language.

For more in-depth study, we have included further information on the diversity of modern European language and how it has developed.

We want to make sure we reflect the way language changes. So please join the discussion. Do you think you express nationality through language rather than through what's written in your passport?
