"I
am a resident of Harehills and have lived there for nearly 3 years
and disagree with some of the comments of Kevin Hickson.
"I
am a single parent who works full time and own my own house and
I live on Nowell Avenue and 70% of the houses on our street are
owned and we all take pride in our homes and the upkeep of our homes
overall presentation.
"Yes,
there are drug dealers in action in the Harehills area but I can
honestly say that I have walked down Harehills Lane at all times
of the day and not once have I ever seen anyone dealing.
Disturbance
"The only problem that we as residents are facing is the high
speed traffic on Harehills Lane during the night, young children
being allowed to congregate around the Post Office area causing
a disturbance and the sound of sirens at late hours of the night.
"The
bottom half of Harehills Lane is run down and is unsightly I will
agree but surely Harehills shouldn't have the reputation of a "kooky
old place" when not all the streets are the same.
"From
the Esso garage on Harehills Lane up to the fourth street towards
York Road are all respectable clean streets where residents take
pride in their homes and maintain the houses and gardens.
Maintain
"Further down towards the Health Centre there are dismantled
old cars and litter lining the streets and run down houses where
no care has been taken to maintain the upkeep of the property.

"I
would agree that the "socially challenged" residents rarely complain
to Leeds City Council, so nothing is ever done to repair the run
down streets of Harehills.
"On
the other hand if the residents are not willing to complain then
I would assume that they are happy living in a area labelled "kooky".
Split "Harehills seems to be split into two sides one side where
people who do work and do have their own homes, and the other where
the homes are rented and the area is being run down.
"But
it is because of the latter that the area is labelled "kooky".
"I
will agree with Kevin that the crime rate is high and I myself have
been broken into before Christmas last year whilst I was visiting
my sick daughter in the hospital.
"The
police were illusive and the break in didn't come as any surprise.
Reputation
"In conclusion, if the "socially challenged" residents of Harehills
just took a little pride and consideration for the other residents,
and the landlords stopped milking the tenants, then Harehills reputation
wouldn't be as low as it is.
"If
the Police cracked down on the drug dealers, and dealt with dysfunctional
families properly then this behaviour could be stamped out of Harehills
and some order could be restored and a higher reputation given to
this area.
"All
it takes is for the Police, Leeds City Council and the Councillors
of the Ward to work together closely and give Harehills a better
reputation."
