Crowds
flocked to Potternewton park to celebrate the 37th Leeds West Indian
Carnival on a bright and sunny Bank Holiday Monday.
An
array of sights, sounds and smells greeted the revellers with West
Indian food stalls, sound systems, costumes and floats which brought
that unique carnival atmosphere back to the park.
Everyone was in party mood as there was much dancing and horn blowing
to the sounds of Soca and Calypso.

Bank
Holiday Monday is the traditional culmination of the Leeds carnival
that began on Friday with the Carnival Queen show in Millennium
Square where the winner was 23 year-old Davina Williams. Her costume
was titled De Birth of De Phoenix, designed by Colin Spalding and
The Renegades of Mas. All from Luton.
Celebrations started when the early warm-up parade, the J'Ouvert
began at 6am for those early risers.
The
main carnival procession left Potternewton Park at 2pm and paraded
through the streets of Chapeltown, before coming back to the park
in the evening for the judging of troupes.
