Your Story: my granda at 21 |
 |
I went out to work I don't think anyone worked from home in those days like they do now.
In my unit ar RAF Cranwell there was approximatly 10 men. I no longer keep in touch with these but often wonder what they are doing as we built up a close bond
I worked long days in the RAF and also extra hours doing parades, fire pickets. I also worked with family workers in the area to help out local families in need. I was paid 14 shillings per week which was quite a good wage in those days. I lived in a village called Caythorpe which was nearby to the airbase. I often walked to work or cycled becuase there was no transport in those days. I enjoyed my time in the RAF and have happy memories of my time. I still take a lot of interest in air shows. I was second in a competition run by Daily Mirror which was a speed boat called Hells a popping on the Norfolk Broads.
