Your Story: My grandma Alice Barnes |
 |
In the 1950's I was working as a shop assistant. With this job I didn't need any qualifications as long as my Maths was good, because the tills were not able to work the answer out for us. I had to have a uniform for this job I wore a white overall. Nancy, Elsie and Lala were my work mates.
Altogether we worked about forty-four hours a week. Our pay was about £8.00 a week. The thing I liked most about the job was working with the public. To get to work I walked or went on my bike. I had one meal at work and that was lunch. At the end of the week, I was paid my wage which went on board, clothes and holidays.
By interviewing my Grandma I realised how much things have changed from 1948 until present day.
