Leicester boasts the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India and the biggest Caribbean carnival after Notting Hill.Ìý This diversity is reflected at the University of Leicester, which offers a wide range of clubs and societies ranging from the Afro Caribbean Society to the British Oriental Society to the Islamic Society.Ìý On the other hand, the city of Durham is 98.6% white.Ìý The ethnic diversity within the city is not reflected within the university though - only 48.04% of its students are white British.Ìý Durham students gave Durham 2 out of 10 for ethnicity, 10 being the highest.Ìý They said most of the population were white and middle class. Nightlife The social side of life at Durham University is enhanced by the collegiate system, something it shares with the prestigious universities of Oxford and Cambridge.Ìý The students I questioned there said there were three main clubs in Durham, the favourite being Klute.

"On the surface the nightlife seems poor but after a while you learn to love it!", said one student.Ìý An obvious location bonus is the proximity of Durham to Newcastle, as once all the clubs in Durham have been explored there are always the clubs in Newcastle!Ìý As with most universities there are cheap drinks offers, double vodkas are only £2 and pints around £1.40 - it's great being a student! In Leicester the clubbing scene is similar with three or four main clubs and loads of bars.Ìý The students I asked from Leicester told me students tend to stick to going out on weeknights and leave the weekends for local people.Ìý Zanzibar is the big place on a Monday, but Liquid has emerged as a new rival.Ìý The Students' Union at Leicester also hosts great nights out and won Students Union of the Year last year. Graduates Leicester University offers a network of support for final year students, employer presentations, a graduate fair held at the Walkers Stadium and the Leicester Award are all examples.Ìý

The Leicester Award is a programme for 100 students to gain accreditation for their extra curricular activities.Ìý Last year 50.7% of graduates went into full-time paid work, and 22.3% going onto further study. Durham University offers similar services - graduate fairs and careers advice are readily available.Ìý Out of 1093 graduates, 565 (67.3%) went into full-time employment, and 7.0% of Durham graduates went onto further study.Ìý Both universities offer thorough and relevant careers advice to their graduates. This could be why both universities do so well in the league tables; Durham is situated around 11th and Leicester 18th. Interesting facts!
