After four nights of unrest in English cities, a sign urging Londoners to be nice to each other appears near an Underground station.

After hundreds of youths rampaged through Manchester city centre on Tuesday night, hurling bottles and stones at police and vandalising shops, the verdict of fellow citizens is clear.

A candle-lit vigil was held in Birmingham at the scene of where three men, Haroon Jahan, 21, Shahzad Ali, 30, and Abdul Musavir, 31, were killed after they were hit by a car on Tuesday night. They were protecting their property. A 32-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Tariq Jahan, whose son was killed, stood in the middle of the semi-circle of some 250 well-wishers as they lit candles.

Magistrates in London, Manchester and Solihull worked through the night on Wednesday to fast track some of the defendants who were in custody in relation to the disturbances. The total number of people arrested in relation to riots which started on Saturday stands at more than 1,100.
