A new series of A History of Britain by Simon Schama

ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ TWO, Tuesday 28 May, 9.00 pm

Simon Schama brings A History of Britain to a close in four concluding episodes on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ TWO from Tuesday 28 May accompanied by further opportunities to step into history on .

"Each episode has a tough centre," explains Simon Schama, "Nature and evolution; the lives of women in the industrial world; the failed promises of the liberal empire and how much past does Britain need."

These final programmes weave a rich tapestry of the people and events that influenced the making of modern Britain. Filmed across the UK, France, Ireland and India - at stunning locations and national heritage sites - the programmes are populated not just with kings and queens, but with philosophers and poets, artists and artisans, the common man and the new woman, the thinkers and the doers.

The award-winning ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ history website is full of complementary articles and features, and Simon Schama will be live on the web for an on-line chat following the third episode on 11 June.

Readings in the series are by, among others, James Bolam, Kenneth Cranham, Charles Dance, Amelia Fox, John Kavanagh, Jonathan Pryce, Prunella Scales, Juliet Stevenson and David Threlfall.

The original music composed for the series by John Harle is performed by the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Concert Orchestra and includes the solo voice of Willard White.

Simon Schama's A History of Britain is a ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ production for ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ TWO in association with The History Channel. The series producer is Liz Hartford and the executive producer is Martin Davidson.

Simon Schama delivers the inaugural ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ History Lecture on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½'s new digital channel, ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ FOUR, on Thursday 20 June at 9.00pm.

Executive Producer Martin Davidson gives a behind-the-scenes insight into The Making Of A History Of Britain. The site also profiles the life of one of our greatest ever statesmen, Churchill, and offers a wealth of material relating to World War II. A number of Churchill's speeches are audio-streamed online for all to hear.
