TV DRAMA

Newcomers cause a stir in the tranquil village of Oakleigh

Ricky Tomlinson and Denise Welch are set to disturb the peace in the sleepy village of Oakleigh in Devon when they join Angela Griffin and Ian Kelsey (Frankie and Matt Brewer) in the new series of Down To Earth.

They thunder into town as Tony and Jackie Murphy, the brawling northern duo whose relationship becomes the topic of local discussion.

Desperate to leave his past behind - especially man-eating Jackie - Tony has decided to start a new life in Devon with his and Jackie's tearaway teenage daughter, Emma.

He trundles into town in his psychedelic camper van, in which he claims he drove the Beatles around as the one and only roadie of the Fab Four.

Tony is a loveable, modern-day Del boy, always looking to make a quick buck.

He is full of money-making scams that often involve the assistance of other village members, much to their dismay.

Tony is running the village pub and wants to buy it - in a bid to raise funds, he convinces Matt that together they can bottle the water from the farm well and sell it behind the bar.

However, his plans are soon dashed when Jackie makes an unwelcome and unexpected visit and reveals she has a few ideas of her own, including moving back in with Tony.

Mervyn Watson, Executive Producer, says of the new residents: "We're delighted to welcome Ricky Tomlinson and Denise Welch to the cast of Down To Earth.

"The tranquillity of Oakleigh and the surrounding Devonshire countryside will never be the same after the arrival of the Murphys.

"They join Angela Griffin and Ian Kelsey who earlier this year ensured the return of this highly successful and popular series, to be screened next year on ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ ONE."

Life on the farm is still proving a challenge for the Brewers, especially when their plans to farm organic vegetables are rejected and wicked whispers result in a loss of customers.

Frankie's pregnancy is the subject of mixed emotions: Lucy gets a touch of the green-eyed monster, Sam becomes curious as to where babies come from, and Wilson can hardly contain his excitement about the prospect of becoming a grandfather.

Becky has got her own dilemmas to deal with, particularly how to catch the attention of Danny, the new farm help.

With her GCSEs looming, the pressure becomes too much and Becky finds herself running from her responsibilities and being led astray by Emma.

Whilst Matt and Frankie believe the girls are studying they are in fact hanging out with Danny and his mates and attending all-night parties.

Throughout the series there will be a host of notable guest appearances, including Gary Webster, while Claire King and Ian Kelsey reunite on screen for the first time since their steamy storyline in Emmerdale.

The series is currently filming in Buckinghamshire and Devon until October and is due for transmission next year.
