Wimbledon 2004

Introduction

Monday 21 June heralds the start of the 2004 Wimbledon Championships, and the return of أغر؟´«أ½ Sport's award-winning live coverage of the nation's favourite summer event.

With live and exclusive coverage on أغر؟´«أ½ ONE and أغر؟´«أ½ TWO, Radio Five Live, interactive through أغر؟´«أ½i and bbc.co.uk/wimbledon, you can follow all the action from SW19 wherever you are.

Television output is enhanced this year with an increase in the number of show courts covered by أغر؟´«أ½ cameras from seven to eight.

Once again, Sue Barker will present the أغر؟´«أ½'s live coverage from the All England Club, with John Inverdale fronting the nightly highlights programme, Today at Wimbledon.

Returning to the أغر؟´«أ½'s commentary box in 2004 will be the award-winning John McEnroe.

A clear favourite with viewers at home, John's upfront delivery and unbeatable experience on the grass courts of Wimbledon will also be available to office workers and website users in the form of a Mini McEnroe desktop alert.

Every time there is news or results, Mini McEnroe pops up on screen and shouts, 'You cannot be serious'.

Also returning for his third year with the أغر؟´«أ½ will be three-times former champion, Boris Becker.

The youngest player ever to win Wimbledon at age 17, Boris brings an in-depth knowledge of the Championship to viewers.

Tracy Austin also returns for a second year behind the microphone. Mixed-doubles winner with brother John at the 1980 Wimbledon Championships, Tracy is also a two-times winner of the US Open (1979 and 1981).

New أغر؟´«أ½ signings this year are Michael Stich and Liz Smylie. Michael will work across television and radio, and Liz will work for television.

Michael began playing tennis aged six and, among other titles, went on to win the Wimbledon men's singles in 1991.

Liz is also a former Wimbledon champion, winning both the women's doubles and mixed doubles competitions.

Former champions Pat Cash and Virginia Wade will also be back with the أغر؟´«أ½ for 2004.

Making up the team are John Lloyd, Jo Durie, Annabel Croft, Andrew Castle, Chris Bailey, Peter Fleming, John Alexander, Ann Jones, Mark Cox and Sam Smith - all adding their expertise to the أغر؟´«أ½'s coverage.

Former British players Chris Bradnam and Jason Goodall also join the television commentary team this year.

Barry Davies, David Mercer, Bill Threllfall, Simon Reed, John Barrett and Matt Chilton will also be back in action in the commentary box.

Reporting from around the All England Club, interviewing the players and soaking up the unique atmosphere will be أغر؟´«أ½ Sport's Garry Richardson, Jill Douglas, Phil Jones, Hazel Irvine and Rishi Persad.

أغر؟´«أ½ coverage of Wimbledon will feature the use of Hawk-Eye for the second year.

The unique ball tracking system gives viewers in-depth analysis of the intricacies of a player's game and is used by the commentators and studio team to highlight patterns of play as well as analysing line calls.

Hawk-Eye will be used on centre court and court number one to give viewers a full breakdown of the patterns of play, enhancing television coverage of the Championships.

A huge success over the last three years, أغر؟´«أ½i will be once again offering digital viewers a whole host of extra features.

Satellite and cable viewers have the chance to choose live action from up to five courts of play, and Freeview viewers have access to two additional courts, as well as all the latest news, scores and results.

If you're stuck in the office, bbc.co.uk/wimbledon will ensure you don't miss a shot during the Championships with fully updated scores, results and news service.

For the latest news, sign up for Mini McEnroe to get desktop alerts to your computer.

Radio Five Live's coverage will begin at 12.30pm each day with Simon Mayo alongside seasoned expert Clare Balding, أغر؟´«أ½ Radio's tennis reporter Jonathan Overend and a host of expert commentators.

A new signing for Five Live is former Davis Cup captain David Lloyd, who joins the team this year, as well as former coach of Becker and Ivanesevic, Bob Brett.

Digital listeners can also tune into additional coverage on Five Live Sports Extra.
