Documentary about Colombian painter and sculptor Fernando Botero. For more than 40 years, he has produced works - often featuring generously-proportioned figures in brightly-coloured landscapes - that have been coveted by collectors all over the world. With homes in Paris, Monte Carlo and Manhattan, his success has given him an enviable lifestyle – an existence far removed from his impoverished childhood in the tough barrios of Medellin. But Botero has never forgotten his ghetto roots and his latest paintings express his horror at the plight of the people of Iraq.
In this film, Newsnight’s culture correspondent Steve Smith accompanies Botero as he returns to his troubled homeland, where he has been the target of numerous kidnap attempts and must now be escorted by armed guards. As Botero arrives, he discovers that a political firestorm has engulfed his son - a charismatic politician who faces years in prison following allegations of corruption.
