The Swiss alphorn, often seen as a novelty instrument, has caused a conflict between the innovative musicians Hans-Jurgen Sommer, Hans Kennel and Balthasar Streiff and the all-powerful, rule-making Yodelling Association. At the heart of the issue is the question of how traditional music is meant to survive if musicians are not allowed to improvise and develop.
