The Big Flutter: The Grand National on Film

Charting how TV coverage helped turn the Grand National's greatest moments into some of the nation's best-loved sporting stories. With Bob Champion and Sir Peter O'Sullevan.

For more than a hundred years the great drama of the North West's spectacular race has been captured on film - today it's watched by an estimated 600 million people worldwide and has become one of Liverpool's proudest exports.

This film explores how television coverage turned the National's greatest moments into some of the nation's best-loved sporting stories and secured its reputation as the 'People's Race'.

Featuring a wealth of film archive, including rarely seen footage of the 1911 race, The Big Flutter relives the moments that shaped a national institution.

Racing legends such as Ginger McCain and Bob Champion are joined by Super-fans John Parrott and Claire Sweeney to share their memories of the race's highs and lows. From the great days of Red Rum to the moment in 1997, when the people of the North West rallied round in the face of an IRA bomb threat.
