On a hot Cheshire day in 1959, the family gets stuck in traffic. Blake Morrison reads his memoir. From 1994.

On a hot Cheshire day in 1959, the family gets stuck in traffic. But Blake's dad is an impatient doctor who does not take to traffic delays well and he takes silly risks.

His father was always pushing the limits of legality - despite his white collar, middle class professional status, Dr Arthur Morrison was something of a rebel. Not a serious criminal, but a petty cheat - always glad to get one over the establishment.

Could a medical operation finally defeat the cantankerous man?
