1962 in Kirkby Lonsdale, Blake and his father are on a wet camping trip. 12-year-old Blake sits in a pub with his father who can't wait to join in a discussion on Khrushchev.

Jumping forward, the writer and his sister sit with their dying father longing to hear the stories that used to annoy them
