Mary Anne has a live session from LA based producer Sudan Archives. Known to friends and family as Brittany Parks, the 24 year old taught herself to play the violin mainly by ear. Brittany grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio and moved to LA aged 19 to study music initially released under the name Sudan Moon, a moniker coined from her childhood nickname and her love of Sailor Moon.
During her teenage year's, Brittany discovered ethnomusicology and began exploring the work of Cameroonian electro pioneer Francis Bebey, using his strings/electro combo as a jump-off for her own sound.
It was following her move to LA that Brittany began exploring her connections to North East Africa and she gradually began to incorporate the playing style of African fiddlers and musicians after hearing the likes of Asim Gorashi, Ali Farka Touré and Juldeh Camarah. She says of this exploration: "The way they played the violin was different from classical music. I resonated with their style, and I was like, maybe I can blend it with electronic music… I started mixing violin into beats. It wasn't complicated — I'd just sing straight into the iPad!"
Her latest album 'Athena' was released on the 1st of November via Stones Throw records.
