Mary Anne has a live session from Zambian born rapper Sampa The Great. Her debut album 'The Return' is out now on the Ninja Tune Label. The album features a number of collaborators and is produced by Stones Throw legend (and Tom Ravenscroft fave), Jonwayne.
The album finds Sampa tackle big questions and explore big themes such as what it means to feel at home, to feel excluded, and to see someone as an outsider. . It stems from the rift Sampa has experienced in the rise of her career, where she鈥檚 celebrated as part of a new generation of Australian musicians, while at the same time still being seen as an other. Much of what Sampa has been trying to accomplish over the last 6 years relates to the idea of home and ones sense of self, with Sampa herself saying: "蜜芽传媒 is described in a lot of ways and means a lot of different things to different people. I had to redefine in my mind and in my spirit what home means.鈥�
Title track The Return features vocals from Sampa's sister Mwanje and samples of her mother, Theresa, while both her Botswana-based parents are in the video for OMG. She has also released a short film titled 鈥樏垩看絚oming鈥� about her experiences returning home to play her first shows on African soil.
Sampa was born in Zambia and raised in Botswana. She moved to Australia in 2013 from California and immersed herself in Sydney鈥檚 hip hop scene. She originally moved to Australia to study audio production at SAE Instiute.
