Lifesavers - An Ostair

Tha euslaintich thar-phlanntachaidh fhaighinn 'beatha ùr'. Transplant patients are given a 'new life'.

Tha euslaintich thar-phlanntachaidh am measg an fheadhainn a gheibh "beatha ùr". Às dèidh tinneas, feumar tric feitheamh bliadhnaichean airson ball-bodhaig ùr. Tha thar-phlanntachadh air a bhith comasach fad 100 bliadhna. Bho chionn ghoirid thathar air ceuman mòra a dhèanamh. Gabhaidh rud a bha do-chreidsinneach bho chionn beagan bhliadhnaichean a dhèanamh: gabhaidh buill-bodhaig a-nise an cumail beò fad làithean, seach uairean. Tha luchd-rannsachaidh a' sireadh dhòighean air fulangas nam ball a leudachadh. Gabhaidh buill nach biodh freagarrach airson an ath-chur aig aon àm an cleachdadh a-nise.

Transplant patients are among the people who are given a "new life". After a serious illness, they often have to wait years for the life-saving organ to be found and used. Transplants have been medically possible for 100 years but progress in this area has been taking giant strides in recent times.

What was unthinkable just a few years ago is now possible: donor organs can now be kept “alive” not just for hours, but for days. Researchers are now trying to change the tolerance limits for donor organs. Some that previously would not have met the requirements for a donation can already be used successfully today.
