The Peace Proms and The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland
The Cross Border Orchestra and the importance of music for young people.
Helen Mark presents ѿý Radio Ulster’s weekly Ulster-Scots magazine show alongside Rab Lennox and Willie Hill. This week, the team use the upcoming “Peace Proms” in Belfast as an excuse to celebrate The Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland and the importance of music as a tool to bring young people together. Helen meets Sharon Tracey-Dunne - who founded the orchestra thirty years ago - to hear the incredible story behind the project and why it almost didn’t happen. There’s also a chat with local piper Grahame Harris who talks about the significant Ulster-Scots elements within the peace proms - which features pipes, drums and highland dance. And of course – contributions from some of the young people involved. Meanwhile, the team talk about their own ‘musical upbringing’ and how music lessons at an early age helped shape the people they’d become.
As always, listeners are invited to contact the programme with a good Ulster-Scots yarn or event to talk about. The easiest way to do that is by email - kintra@bbc.co.uk.
