Dvorak’s 'New World’ Symphony in St Davids Cathedral

Elizabeth Alker showcases the best performances from the UK and beyond, including the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales in Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 'From the New World'.

Elizabeth Alker showcases the best performances by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ orchestras, choirs, ensembles and other great performing groups from Europe and around the globe.

Throughout this week we focus on the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ National Orchestra of Wales, travelling with them around the country and especially featuring the music of Welsh composer Grace Williams. Today, we hear her Four Illustrations for the Legend of Rhiannon – Welsh music specially recorded on St David’s Day. And from St Davids Cathedral, the orchestra performs the Ninth Symphony by Dvorak, subtitled ‘From the New World’ because of its associations with North America, where the composer spent a brief but productive period of his life.

We return to the church of St Mark’s in Dundela for more music recorded there by ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Radio 3 as part of the Belfast International Arts Festival. Today, German pianist and former ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ New Generation Artist Elisabeth Brauß performs music by Schubert from the 2023 festival.
