The DPD Murder, Part 1
After a delivery driver is ambushed and beaten to death in broad daylight, detectives from West Mercia Police begin a major manhunt to track down his killers.
A quiet estate in Shrewsbury is the scene of a horrific killing when 23-year-old delivery driver Aurman Singh is ambushed and fatally assaulted in broad daylight while out on his rounds. This episode follows the subsequent murder investigation, minute by minute, from the multiple perspectives of the detectives and specialists working in West Mercia Police.
With no clear motive and no idea of who is responsible, the team, led by DCI Mark Bellamy, of the Major Investigations Unit, must act fast before the trail goes cold. On the ground, the driver’s van and parcels are secured and a forensics team searches for any items that might have been used in the attack. Meanwhile, officers go door to door looking for CCTV and eyewitness accounts that might help identify the suspects.
Unsure of whether they’re dealing with a violent robbery or a hit, DCI Bellamy’s team begin scouring hundreds of hours of CCTV and doorbell footage. They identify two cars lying in wait and realise the attack must have been planned, and with no items stolen, was most like a targeted attack.
Further CCTV shows multiple attackers running back to the cars, and a complex and fast-paced manhunt begins. Details are shared with every officer across three forces. One car is discovered, abandoned, in a nearby street.
Thirty miles away, a number plate recognition camera is pinged by the other car, close to where a lone, unarmed response officer in an unmarked car has been lying in wait. A tense game of cat and mouse begins as the lone officer, PC Bradley Mercer-Wilkinson, tails the vehicle discreetly while the police helicopter and armed officers are scrambled. The helicopter is able to monitor the chase and relay minute-by-minute details back to base where DCI Mark Bellamy and his team are listening. When the four men inside appear to pass around weapons, PC Mercer- Wilkinson fears he has been spotted. But he has to continue his tail alone, and there are tense moments as the detective team monitoring back at HQ can only wait for backup that is still to arrive.
Moments later the suspects in the vehicle turn into a cul de sac, where after a tense wait, one man emerges to dispose of a mystery object in a bin.
Armed response officers finally catch up. And to the watching team’s surprise, the car pulls over, and its occupants surrender.
PC Mercer-Wilkinson returns to the cul de sac alone to recover the mystery object, which is revealed to be an axe wrapped in a hoodie. It’s sent for forensic examination alongside the golf club. But as DCI Bellamy’s team continue to sift through CCTV and doorbell footage, they discover that there were at least seven attackers, each armed. And if there are further weapons, each potentially carrying DNA, they need to be found.
Meanwhile, interview specialists prepare to start questioning the four men in custody. With all needing Punjabi translation, it’s a lengthy process, and three respond with no comment each time. But to the detectives' surprise, one of the four suspects begins to talk.
Still searching for a motive for the attack, detectives receive intelligence that the victim may have been blamed for violence meted out during a fight the previous day. If their suspicions are correct, then it suggests the murder could be a revenge attack, and the speed of retaliation means the attackers had help tracking him down. But from whom?
