The DPD Murder, Part 2

Episode 2 of 6

With four men arrested for delivery driver Aurman Singh’s murder, detectives work to find the weapons used and try to identify an inside man they believe helped to plan the ambush.

Detectives in West Mercia’s Major Investigation Unit have four suspects in custody for the murder of DPD driver Aurman Singh, but only one is talking, and he’s denying everything.

Meanwhile, four more attackers are still at large, and the team still has to find multiple weapons, each potentially carrying critical DNA. The team believe the killers may have had the heads up on the victim’s delivery route to enable them to ambush him but have no idea who had access to that information.

The senior investigating officer, DCI Mark Bellamy, orders digital forensics on phones seized from the suspects, which could be a goldmine of information about contacts and movements. But with multiple devices to be examined, it’s a monumental task. Meanwhile, more officers are sent to the premises of the delivery company to see what they can discover about the victim’s movements and who might have been able to track him ahead of his murder. It means trawling through hours of CCTV footage to see if anyone approached him, his parcels or his van.

Still lacking most of the weapons, the team decide to expand their search. They piece together the killers’ escape route in case they could have discarded anything in the immediate aftermath of the attack. The search team is redeployed in a lay-by and nearby fields and woods along the escape corridor. As the search continues, a call is received from a member of the public who has read about the murder and wants to report finding a hockey stick and a spade while out walking her dog. With the items now sitting in her kitchen, the forensic team is despatched to secure them in case they’re part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, the search team is relocated to comb the area where they were found. Continuing into the night, they come across a turban and a blood-stained stave.

The team now have five possible weapons in their possession: a broken golf club, an axe, a spade, a hockey stick and a stave. All are forensically tested to see whether they hold vital DNA evidence linking them to the four men in custody. As they wait for results, DCI Bellamy is concerned they may not be linked to the men in custody, leaving the investigation no further way forward.

Meanwhile, the manhunt for the attackers in the second car continues. After a tip-off that they could be hiding out at an address in Birmingham, a raid is authorised. An axe and a self-loading pistol are found in a garden shed, but there’s no sign of the missing attackers.

Attention returns to the four men in custody. While three continue to give no comment interviews, one, Arshdeep, continues to speak, denying any part in the attack or subsequent disposal of weapons. But detectives have now identified him as the individual who left the car during the chase to dispose of the axe, and confronted by his lie, Arshdeep changes his story.

Forensics results finally come in, putting Arshdeep at the centre of events, and DCI Bellamy has enough to request charges against him. Meanwhile phone data not only locates the driver Shivdeep at the scene, but shows extraordinary and horrifying footage which leads to a major breakthrough. The CPS agrees to charge all three remaining men with murder too.

Phone examination has thrown up another critical piece of info: a photo of the victim’s van sent to the suspect Arshdeep. Further investigation reveals regular communication between Arshdeep and a number stored under a similar name on the morning of the attack. Detectives trace the number and are led to an employee of the delivery company, Sukhmandeep Singh.

Detectives suspect they have finally found the inside man who was able to supply the victim’s route to his killers, but to be sure, they’re going to have to act fast. Sukhmandeep’s recent messaging suggests he’s planning to flee the country.
