Killing in the Family
After a man attacks and kills his mother with a hammer, detectives investigate his behaviour leading up to the attack.
After a brutal hammer attack in Telford, West Mercia Police have a 31-year-old man in custody. The man’s attack on his family has left his mother dead and his father hospitalised with head injuries. The suspect has a history of mental illness, and detectives must wait for a psychological assessment before they can begin to interview him.
While they wait, the senior investigating officer, DCI Tony Garner, orders a forensic search of the family home to try to get to the bottom of how the
horror unfolded. Blood pattern analysis is carried out to determine the nature of the attack, and a pair of mismatched gloves and a hammer are
removed for further examination.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s father has recovered enough to be interviewed in hospital and gives the team their first account of events that night.
The family’s home security system is discovered to have recorded the suspect visiting the garden several times in between attacking his parents. Detectives review it to see whether they can learn anything about his state of mind.
As the team continues to investigate, they receive more key information. Just two years earlier, the suspect was sectioned after coming close to
attacking his mother. He later returned home but had subsequently stopped taking medication and had resumed smoking cannabis. Text
messages show a family doing all they can to help him recover, especially his mother.
Following psychiatric assessment, the suspect is sent for treatment. When he is finally deemed fit to be interviewed, he admits his actions but tells detectives that at the time he was acting on the voices of angels, who told him his mum was a powerful angel who needed to be sent to heaven.
DCI Garner orders analysis of his phone records. Detectives discover regular contact with a known drug dealer. It raises a significant question: was the suspect taking drugs at the time of this current attack? And could choosing to use drugs have contributed to his changed state of mind, making him more culpable for his actions?
Further phone data suggests he purchased a range of illegal class-A substances, but he denies taking drugs in the months before the attack. The team turn their attention to the drug dealer, raiding his home and seizing his phones in order to investigate their communication.
