Mahler's Third Symphony
The ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic Orchestra and John StorgÃ¥rds are joined by contralto Jess Dandy, the Hallé Choir and the CBSO Youth and Children's choirs for Mahler's Third Symphony.
Mahler described his Third Symphony as a "great hymn to the glory of every aspect of creation", and the music entrances and humbles us as we travel on an epic journey; through meadows and through the animal and human kingdoms to "the love of God". However, the rough and tumble of life is also part of this world; we hear a military march, a children's song and fragments of a folk dance too.
Contralto Jess Dandy joins the ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Philharmonic Orchestra for the awestruck fourth movement, which Mahler titled "What night tells me (mankind)", setting a poem by Nietzsche who searches desperately to make sense of the grief and joy of the world. The Hallé Choir and the CBSO Youth and Children's choirs join the orchestra to bring us chiming bells and the song of the angels.
