Norman Lebrecht talks to the Scottish tenor Nicky Spence about his difficult upbringing and his redemption through singing as a youngster after an accident in which he broke both his legs. Nicky talks candidly about how he turned to therapy to help him deal with issues relating to his body size.
He shares his love for Janacek operas, which he sings in Czech, and the bitter-sweet songs of Noel Coward.
Nicky gives his personal perspective on the current landscape of arts in UK, and the impact of a reduction in funds on opera in particular. He also sheds light aon balancing his busy career with his private life, which he shares with pianist husband Dylan Perez, his recital partner, with whom he has a one-year old boy.
