Norman Lebrecht talks to the pianist Gabriela Montero about growing up in Venezuela and about the heartbreak of living as an exile for the last few years, fighting for human rights, political transparency and music education in her country. She recalls taking part in the Chopin competition in Warsaw, for which she got a bronze medal; and Gabriela explains what happens artistically and scientifically when she improvises, something that has become her trademark of her performing career.
