Episode 15
The hippos arrive after a 700-mile journey, but will they take their first steps into a state-of-the-art home?
The day has finally arrived for the Longleat's first new hippos in decades to arrive at the park. Sisters Matilda and Manon have come on a 700-mile journey from the Czech Republic. The team have been working for months to prepare their new, state-of-the-art home, but will these nervous giants take the vital first step out of the travel crates?
In Lion Country, huge male Klaus’s dominance has been in question after he sustained an injury. To see if he is back to full strength, the keepers have set up an enrichment test – a rope toy attached to a digital gauge and a truck. As Klaus takes the rope in his jaws and starts to pull, we find out if he will be able to remain in charge.
In the deer paddock, the keepers are on the lookout for fawns, and they have high hopes. After a busy rutting season, two stags could soon become fathers. Hamza is dispatched with his camera equipment, but with such a large area to search, it’s not easy to know who has mated with whom or whether any little ones are hiding in the long grass.
Meanwhile, the donkeys have a tea party, and over in the bat cave, Megan gets to experience the morning routine for the Egyptian fruit bats.
