As the animal keepers head home for the evening, the cameras keep rolling. So, what really goes on after dark?

Caleb has been keeping a close eye on Klaus, the ageing lion whose recent sedation for a paw injury left the team concerned. His limp hasn’t fully resolved, and any sign of weakness could put him at risk of attack by his harem of lionesses. Desperate to know if Klaus’s leadership has been challenged overnight, Caleb installs a remote camera to find out what’s really going on when he’s not there. But when the footage is reviewed, the results are not what anyone expected.

Elsewhere, Pumpkin the porcupine gets a visit from Megan, who is on hand to observe her climbing skills. With a fruit platter waiting at the top of her climbing frame, will Pumpkin head for the mango or pick a more unusual treat?

In a newly opened exhibit, a colony of Egyptian fruit bats are settling in, but keeper Nadia is concerned about squabbles breaking out. With no clear hierarchy and limited roosting spots, keeping the peace may not be easy.

Meanwhile, Megan helps with the annual macaque headcount. But with well over 100 monkeys on the loose, it’s hard to keep track of who has already been ticked off the list!

Ben checks in on Monty the Burmese python as he prepares to shed his skin, and Hamza captures a remarkable moment on camera, a sighting of an animal not seen on the estate for more than 400 years.
