Could hand-reared cheetah Xena finally be pregnant? And we find out if you can escape a lion by climbing a tree.
In Cheetah Kingdom, hopes are growing as Xena, the hand-reared female, might be pregnant. It’s a critical moment for the breeding programme and a deeply personal one for the team. Xena was rejected as a cub so the keepers had to step in, but having lacked a maternal role model, there are fears she might never be able to raise young of her own. Now all eyes are on Xena, but reading signs of pregnancy with cheetahs is incredibly difficult, and the next few weeks will be crucial.
Elsewhere, Megan joins Hamza for a strength-and-agility challenge in Lion Country. The team are encouraging the big cats to climb for their food, which creates a great opportunity to assess their physical condition. The lions scrambling up the trees raises an important survival tip: if one’s ever chasing you... maybe don’t climb a tree!
Meanwhile, training continues over at the giraffe house. With medical checks on the horizon, the keepers are trying a new tactic: introducing the herd to a life-size cardboard cut-out of Ben. It might seem like a gimmick, but any change in the environment can trigger tension.
And Tallulah the tapir gets a cooling summer treat, an ice block filled with fruit. Will it pass the taste test?
