100 days of Pope Leo

Is the shape of Pope Leo XIV's papacy emerging? Does the leading AI company risk stretching ethics and stressing democracy? And why did the CIA smuggle books into Cold War Poland?

Cardinal Robert Prevost became Pope Leo XIV in May. 100 days later, is the shape of his papacy emerging? Audrey Carville hears from theologian Professor Anna Rowlands, Michael Kelly whose biography of Pope Leo was published just days after the conclave ended, and Emer McCarthy who works at the Vatican at the Commission for the Protection of Minors.

Artificial Intelligence is one of the priorities Pole Leo has been raising in the Vatican and in his addresses. Karen Hao has been studying the best known company in that field, OpenAI, and its chief executive Sam Altman. Is AI stretching established ethics and stressing democracy?

On last week's programme we reflected on the themes of George Orwell's Animal Farm, on the 80th anniversary of its publication. He wrote about the simplicity of slipping from democracy to totalitarianism. Charlie English has written a book about a secret CIA programme during the Cold War which saw books like Orwell's Animal Farm and 1984, but also Agatha Christie novels and magazines like Cosmopolitan, smuggled into Communist Poland. Cardinal Karol Józef Wojtyła was a recipient of CIA-sponsored books before being elected Pope.
