Cheese Fit for a King, Organic Farming and Balwen Sheep

Caws Cenarth earns a Royal Warrant, we hear the story behind a south Wales organic meat business, and breeders celebrate 40 years of the Balwen Welsh Mountain Sheep Society.

We begin at Caws Cenarth Cheese, founded in the 1980s by Thelma and Gwynfor Adams in response to milk quotas. From its farmhouse origins, the company has grown into a respected producer, supplying top retailers across Britain. Their cheeses now carry a Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Majesty King Charles III, a recognition of quality and craft that would have made Thelma proud. Carwyn Adams continues the family legacy, producing cheese that reflects both tradition and excellence.

Next, reporter Rhodri Davies visits Penrhiw Farm Organic, a family enterprise that has championed sustainable farming for more than 25 years. By selling their meat directly to customers, they’ve built a business that keeps food production closely tied to the land and its natural cycles. Their story shows how traditional methods can adapt to modern challenges without losing touch with their roots.

Finally, we celebrate the survival of the Balwen Welsh Mountain Sheep. Once reduced to a single ram after the harsh winter of 1947, the breed remains rare but resilient. At Shadog Farm near Llandysul, breeders gathered to mark the 40th anniversary of the Balwen Welsh Mountain Sheep Society – proof of the dedication of farmers and enthusiasts to ensure this striking native breed endures.
