Patrick: A Young Traveller Lost

The tragic death of 12-year-old Patrick McDonagh sheds light on the suicide crisis affecting the Traveller community and the broader social and mental health challenges involved.

Documentary examining the disproportionately high suicide rates within the Traveller community, told through the story of 12-year-old Patrick McDonagh from Dublin, whose death made national headlines in Ireland.

The film follows Patrick’s parents, Michelle and Pat, as they cope with their loss, while also exploring the broader social and structural challenges faced by Travellers, including discrimination, exclusion and limited access to mental health services.

Leading Traveller voices from around the Republic of Ireland, including Senator Eileen Flynn and director of the Traveller Counselling Service Thomas McCann, provide insight into the lived experiences of a community often marginalised both in Ireland and the UK.

Through the compelling first-hand account of Bernie Power, a Traveller outreach worker, we come to understand the inner turmoil of those from the Traveller community struggling with poor mental health, and the real-life positive impact of reaching out for help.

Developed in close collaboration with Traveller organisations, the film presents an unfiltered view of the impact of suicide on families and communities, and the urgent need for targeted interventions.

Patrick’s death resonated deeply across the Traveller community, highlighting the scale of the crisis and the need for collective action.
