Abandoned Ulster
County Down-born photographer Rebecca Brownlie teams up with Ulster-Scots writers Darren Gibson and Anne McMaster to create a photographic and literary record of Ulster's abandoned properties.
Local photographer Rebecca Brownlie has built a considerable social media following through her work documenting abandoned buildings across Ulster, and in this film she starts a new project collaborating with Ulster-Scots writers.
Rebecca meets Darren Gibson and Anne McMaster, and brings them to sites that have strong Ulster-Scots connections, so that they can work together to create a photographic and literary record of abandoned properties.
Darren and Anne’s work is imbued with a sense of place and is often inspired by memory, something to which both agree the Ulster-Scots language is well suited. They visit a former linen mill in County Antrim and an old farmhouse in County Down to consider what the sites tell us about how previous generations of local people used to work and live.
Rebecca also finds an abandoned mission hall in County Armagh, and she learns about the tradition of gospel meetings throughout rural Ulster.
Darren and Anne compose works using Rebecca’s photographs for inspiration, and they consider themes such as mortality, heritage and memory - themes that resonate with Rebecca after a difficult year.
Although the buildings that Rebecca photographs are relics of the past, both her work and the new writing it inspired in this film have helped these buildings find a place in the present and provided a record for the future.
