The Glass Menagerie, Common Tongue and The Cumnock Tryst Festival
Dundee Rep's new production of the Tennessee Williams classic 1930s-set family drama The Glass Menagerie. Actors Amy Conachan and Declan Spaine join Len.
At the weekend, Dundee Rep Theatre kicked off a new production of the classic play The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams - nearly 30 years after their last production of it, which starred a young David Tennant! This time around, the cast includes Amy Conachan as the painfully shy Laura Wingfield and Declan Spaine as Jim O’Connor, the man who comes to dinner with her family and the person Laura’s mother, Amanda, sees as a potential match for her withdrawn daughter. Amy and Declan tell Len more.
Staying with theatre, Fraser Scott's play Common Tongue was a sell-out 5-star debut last year. It’s a one-actor show exploring the impact of culture and identity in Scotland – starring Olivia Caw as Bonnie – a woman whose whole life has been defined by wirds; the richt wans, the wrang wans, aun the wans used against her. The play is now in the midst of a tour around central and southern Scotland, and Fraser and Olivia are in studio to discuss it.
Acclaimed composer Sir James Macmillan and artistic director of Drake Music Scotland, Pete Sparkes, tell Len about The Unbroken Thread project that saw The Cumnock Tryst festival, Hebrides Ensemble and the charity Drake Music Scotland come together over a two-year period with young people with additional support needs in the local area for a series of workshops to explore music-making without limits – using innovative technology and accessible instruments. It will culminate in a joyful showcase at the festival on Friday morning.
