World Mental Health Day in Rural Wales
Stories of resilience in agriculture and on the coast for World Mental Health Day, plus a milestone at the National Botanic Garden.
This week’s Country Focus begins in Carmarthenshire, where reporter Megan Williams marks the 25th anniversary of the National Botanic Garden of Wales in Llanarthne. Staff and visitors reflect on its history, achievements and future plans.
With World Mental Health Day approaching, the programme then turns to stories of resilience and wellbeing in the countryside. In Gwent, we meet farmer William Meadmore, winner of Wales YFC’s first Mental Health Champion Award, who is also working with the Samaritans’ “Our Farming, Our Future” project. True to life, the conversation takes place in his tractor while harvesting maize.
Finally, on the coast at Aberporth, surf instructor Kwame Salam explains how surfing and the sea can help people find calm, confidence and connection, showing how the outdoors can play a powerful role in supporting mental health.
Details of help and support with mental health in agriculture are available ѿý Action Line.
