Elgar and Rachmaninov from the Hall茅
Conductor Kahchun Wong and the Halle launch their new season with a concert including music by Shostakovich, Elgar and Rachmaninov
Launching his second season as Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Kahchun Wong is joined by Rachel Helleur-Simcock to perform Elgar鈥檚 Cello Concerto. Written in the aftermath of World War One, the piece, a cornerstone of the instrument鈥檚 repertoire and, famously, the composer鈥檚 last completed work, is deeply emotional 鈥� never more so than in the heart-rending Adagio third movement. Despite this, there are still moments of hope and that recognisable Elgarian nobility; altogether, it remains among the composer鈥檚 most celebrated and well-loved works. In striking contrast, Shostakovich鈥檚 Festive Overture and Rachmaninov鈥檚 exuberant Symphony No.2 will also be performed by the Halle. The Festive Overture in particular, with its grandiose brass fanfare opening full of cymbal crashes, makes for a powerful start to the season.
