Edge of Summer

Episode 1 of 3

As tourists leave, Ethan hunts rare waves, Hanno dives deep, and Ricky climbs again. On the north coast, winter beckons – and the locals rise to meet it.

North Coast Riders is a visually rich, character-led series set on Northern Ireland’s rugged north coast – a place where the ocean meets towering cliffs, and the people who live here chase freedom in the waves, beneath the surface and high above the rocks.

In high summer, tourists flood the beaches, but the locals grind – teaching, guiding, climbing, surfing – keeping the heartbeat of the coast alive.

Ethan Hill and Albert teach surfing at Troggs, continuing a legacy that began with Ethan’s grandfather in the 1960s. But Ethan’s journey isn’t about trophies – it’s about chasing rare waves and carving his own path.

Hanno Windisch, a freediver drawn from Germany by the Atlantic’s pull, guides others into the deep – through kelp forests and sea caves. For him, freediving is breathwork, risk and a quiet kind of magic.

On the cliffs of Fair Head, Ricky Bell climbs with old friend Simon. Once one of Ireland’s top climbers, Ricky now balances fatherhood with the call of the rock, rediscovering the thrill that once defined him.

As summer fades and winter swells, the coast empties, but the adventure deepens. Ethan and Albert chase bigger waves. Hanno dives colder waters. Ricky climbs through wind and mist. The series captures it all: wetsuits drying in back gardens, tea shared on windswept headlands, and the quiet battles to stay true to a life shaped by nature.

North Coast Riders is more than sport – it’s about purpose, healing and the deep bond between people and place. It’s a story of grit, community and the wild freedom found at the edge of land and sea.
