The Wild Atlantic
As storms lash the coast, Ethan and Albert chase a mythical wave, Ricky’s protégé tackles a bold climb, Carla dreams of a surf club, and Hanno juggles jobs to stay near the ocean.
Winter tightens its grip on Northern Ireland’s north coast. The beaches are empty, the skies heavy, and the Atlantic wild. But for the locals, this is when the coast reveals its true self – raw, quiet and full of possibility.
Ethan Hill and his best mate Albert scour charts and forecasts, chasing a mythical wave that only breaks under rare winter conditions. Descended from a line of north coast surfers, Ethan’s legacy is rooted in summer surf schools – but winter is when he feels most alive. Cold water, empty line-ups and the thrill of something rare rising from the deep.
We meet Dillon, a teenage climber mentored by Ricky Bell. Dillon is locked into a year-long obsession: a complex boulder problem beneath Fair Head that demands precision, power and patience. As Dillon rehearses moves and brushes holds, Ricky – once one of Ireland’s top climbers – feels something stir. In recent years, Ricky has carefully balanced fatherhood and work, but Dillon’s quiet focus begins to rekindle his own passion for climbing.
Carla, a surfer and mother, moved to the coast to raise her daughter near the ocean she loves. When she was younger, female surfers were rare – now she’s helping shape a more inclusive scene. Her dream is to build a surf club that fosters mentorship, support and camaraderie for all, while empowering more women and girls to find confidence and community in the waves.
Meanwhile, Hanno Windisch, the German-born freediver, faces a quieter struggle. With tourist season over, he juggles jobs to stay afloat. His winter dives are cold, silent and deeply personal. Beneath the grey surface, he finds clarity, connection and the discipline that keeps him grounded.
The Wild Atlantic captures a season of solitude, grit and transformation. From cliff edge to ocean floor, this episode reveals how winter strips things back to their essence. It’s not just about sport – it’s about identity, resilience and the enduring pull of wild places.
