In the Driving Seat
Chris Lynch travels across Europe to explore the future of mobility, meeting the inventors and users behind the world’s most innovative wheelchair designs.
What does the future of mobility look like, and who is it for? In the Driving Seat follows filmmaker and wheelchair user Chris Lynch as he test-drives some of the boldest, smartest and most life-changing mobility technology on the planet.
From the Swiss Alps to the streets of London, Chris road-tests some of the most innovative wheelchairs ever made - from stair-climbing powerchairs and sleek urban models to a mountain-conquering off-roader called the Rock Climber. Along the way, he meets the inventors, engineers and users behind the technology that is transforming lives, and discovers how design and imagination are reshaping what mobility can mean.
In Spain, Chris visits the creators of ATLAS 2030, a robotic exoskeleton that offers children with disabilities the chance to walk with assistance. In Switzerland, he tests the next version of the Genny, a Segway-inspired chair made by Paolo Badano, who turned his own injury into a breakthrough. Back in the UK, he tries out the Trekinetic—an ultra-light, Formula-1-engineered wheelchair, and meets Charlotte, whose life has been transformed by it.
Alongside the thrill of each test drive, Chris meets the dreamers, designers and doers who are redefining what mobility can be and asks why this incredible technology isn’t reaching more people. He explores how the next generation of wheelchairs is tackling environmental challenges too, from recyclable materials to energy-efficient motors designed for life on the move. Can mobility design be truly inclusive, affordable and sustainable?
Part road movie, part tech test and part human story, In the Driving Seat is a personal and powerful exploration of innovation, inclusion and independence. Because the best design puts the user in control, shaping the tech and shaping the future.
