Lost in the Equation: Exploring Dyscalculia

This documentary explores the learning disabilty dyscalculia, meeting people with the condition and experts within the field to find out more.

Dyscalculia affects around 6% of the global population. That’s around 4 million people in the UK and just under 200,000 in Wales.

Affecting a person's ability to understand numbers and perform arithmetic operations, the condition can cause those affected to face a multitude of challenges. Simply put, if numbers are involved, there’s a problem to overcome.

People with dyscalculia can have trouble telling the time, reading bus and train timetables and completing numerous financial transactions. They often struggle with computer passwords, card PIN numbers and house numbers. Problems with time management means they are very often late in delivering work or making it to appointments.

It's hardly surprising that many people with dyscalculia are more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety disorders as a result of failing to successfully negotiate a range of uncomfortable and often troubling social, work and learning situations which they are asked to negotiate on a daily basis.

In this programme, Francis Jones meets people with the condition and experts working in the field to ascertain how exactly the condition manifests itself in children and adults, and what can be done to mitigate the problems it presents. The programme also offers some strategies for parents who think their child may be dyscalculic, and for those ‘discal-curious’ parents who see their children struggling with numbers and who might be looking to provide adequate support.
