Contemporary and classic tracks from around the world. Playlist at bbcworldservice.com
Ethiopian music appears to be going through a revival, at least as far as collaborations with Western musicians go. Charlie plays two examples this week: Nick Page, aka Dub Colossus, is partnered by master sax player Feleke Hailu Woldemariam and vocalist Bahta Gebrehiwot. And Mulatu Astatke, a leading figure of Ethio-Jazz for about four decades now, has recently teamed up with the British band The Heliocentrics.
Also in the programme: recent album by the French guitarist (and accomplished player on several other string instruments) Titi Robin; the latest offering by Bonga, the voice of Angolan independence; and a new track by the Malian diva Oumou Sangare. And if you wondered what Coba Coba, the title of Novalima’s third album, means: apparently it is an Afro-Peruvian expression used to spur on a musician in the middle of a great solo, something like 'Go for it!'
