Contemporary and classic tracks from around the world. Playlist at bbcworldservice.com
Charlie places new and old side by side this week and does so in a way which might give you a new sense of musical continuity across the decades: there is simple juxtaposition of a historic rembetika recording from Greece with a new remix of very similar music by the playfully named Imam Baildi; there are a couple of rather more subtle hybrids where Jamaican reggae meets UK club music and where Balkan café band takes on a slight veneer of the Viennese avant-garde; and then there are two Kenyan tracks, one in the traditional tarab style and the other an up-to-date urban recording which nevertheless features the sounds of a few ancient European instruments alongside the usual modern electronics. To finish with: instrumental virtuosity from the Joubran brothers, heirs to a long and distinguished musical lineage yet playing unmistakably for a 21st-century audience.
