Duck ponds are probably a lot of people's first contact with birds. Feeding the ducks may lead to kids becoming bird watchers. Duck ponds aren't only the centre of village life, they also provide a useful resource for wild birds: pied wagtails nest nearby, and grey wagtails and swallows feed here. The ducks provide a few services for the wild birds - crows eat their eggs, and nesting birds like goldfinch collect duck feathers to line their nests.
