Vanishing elms

The dark, heavy shapes of elm trees were once a part of the landscape, but they have now died out in an epidemic that lasted 30 years. Their downfall was caused by a fungus that was carried by beetles from tree to tree. Now more than 25 million trees are dead. Some hardy trees have survived, but they are rare. A more common sight is now a row of young elms, dead and bare in the middle of summer. But the elm has been through bad times before, and recovered. It may well do so again.
