A dog's life
There is such snobbery in the appreciation of flowers. While garden roses have always been admired, the dog rose is a floral Cinderella. While cultivated roses have always filled our gardens, the spinier and less ostentatious dog roses are to be found hidden in hedgerows. But they remain among our best-loved wild flowers and the hips that follow summer have provided generations of children with bottled vitamin C. So why has it been stuck with such an ugly name? Allegedly, a Roman soldier, bitten by a rabid dog, was cured with a dog rose root.
