A dog's life

There is such snobbery in the appreciation of flowers. While garden roses have always been admired, the dog rose is a floral Cinderella. While cultivated roses have always filled our gardens, the spinier and less ostentatious dog roses are to be found hidden in hedgerows. It is from cultivated roses, and not dog roses, that perfumes are distilled. Nor can dog roses compete in the tough world of floristry. But they remain among our best-loved wild flowers and the hips that follow summer have provided generations of children with bottled vitamin C. So why has it been stuck with such an ugly name? Allegedly, a Roman soldier, bitten by a rabid dog, was cured with a dog rose root.
