The Flight of the Earls
Hugh O’Neill surrendered to the Crown in March 1603, but Dr ATQ Stewart explains that had O’Neill been informed of the Queen’s death, he may not have admitted defeat.
The Earls' Insecurity led them to flee the country by ship in 1607 following which their lands were seized for new planters to occupy. (Broadcast: 21/01/1992)
