Undeserved reputation
David Attenborough recounts Medieval folklore about the most poisonous animal in creation, which allegedly killed 4000 men in Alexander the Great's army. The creature with this fearsome reputation is the fire salamander, which in reality is quite harmless, as David shows by handling one. It is rarely seen and hides under damp, rotting logs. Salamanders were thought to live in fire and to be able to extinguish the flames, hence this species' name of fire salamander. The death's head moth was another animal which was greatly feared. It has a 'death's head' marking on its back, so folklore said it could kill you if it flew into your house.
